Who Says You Can't Combine Magnetic Polish and Tape?

I've been blogging for almost two months now and have posted over a hundred posts, which is quite a lot of different manis.  One polish type I haven't tried in this time are magnetic polishes as I've always found them a little uninspiring.  Sure, they create interesting patterns but it's a bit gimmicky.  As a last ditch effort, I thought I'd try experimenting with taping, see if I couldn't create something a bit different.  Hot damn, does it ever create an awesome look!

First up, I wanted to find a good, bright complement to Nails Inc Trafalgar Sqaure, a charcoal grey magnetic polish.  I think one of the things making me less enthused about magnetics are that they all come in such boring, dark colours.  Hence my choice of another American Apparel polish, Neon Orange.  This polish I was surprisingly impressed with as I've had a lot of issues with neons being really sheer of late.  This one was actually opaque in two coats and is a nice, sunny yellow-orange.

Next, I cut tiny, narrow triangles of tape, making sure to first press the whole piece against my palm to lessen the stickiness.  I say this as I didn't do this one the first nail, my middle finger, and look how messed up it is.  Oh well, live and learn.  Then, I added a quick coat of Trafalgar Square on top of the tape and used the magnet.  Once done, remove the tape and voila!  I love effect, the little waves between the orange, came out so well.

Love how much the waves stand out in the light.

You're going to want to see the close ups for these, they look really interesting blown up.

The Verdict:  I still think magnetic polishes are a gimmick and certainly not worth the ~$15 I paid for this one when they first came out.  However, when combined with different colours and textures they have merit.  Trafalgar Square applied and reacted to the magnet well but if I were to get any now it would probably be the new China Glazes.
American Apparel Neon Orange is a really nicely applying, bright polish.  More opaque than most neons, it's a pretty colour, worth having.

  1. Wow this is great. I've never seen magnetic polish + tape. The combination really give this manicure a new dimension.

  2. I haven't jumped on the magnet trend because the magnet seems to make the polish darker and yes it is gimmicky. I do like this look though, as it's bright and inventive.

Review: Nicole by OPI A Million Sparkles is Accurately Named

It's amazing what you can find when you wander around at night.  My favourite time to go shopping is ridiculously late and I'm extra happy when it pays off.  I've been looking for Nicole by OPI A Million Sparkles for a while now at that couldn't be more up my alley if it tried.  I finally managed to find it in a Shoppers last night and it really does live up to its name. A Million Sparkles is a predominately blue glitter that has an amazing ability to look like a foil after a couple of coats.  Combine that with gold, silver and pink bar glitter and you have a winner.  It's seriously so sparkly I got distracted from what I was saying at lunch today.  Application is decent but you really need four coats to get completely opaque coverage.  That's ok, glitter dries fast.  It's a little rough too but nothing Seche Vite can't fix.  The Verdict:  Yay glitter! If, like me, you like sparklies to the point where it's the biggest tag on y

Review: JENsations Stars in Space and S'mores

Guess what everyone?  I'm going to review some indie polishes that you can actually buy without having to wait for email messages!  Yay!  And sparkly too!  Imagine all the holo glory as while my lightbox produces lovely even white light, it saps any and all rainbows from manis, leaving me to try to take pictures in my kitchen like a barbarian.  It may not sound that hard but when you use a manual focus 60mm macro lens that has a wafer-thin depth of field, it's not the easiest.  Anyway, let's take a look at two, that's right, two, beautiful polishes from JENsations , Stars in Space and S'mores. First up, Stars in Space.  I started with two coats of Zoya Caprice, a very bright purple creme that you'll be seeing a lot of as it makes for a great base.  Next, two coats of Stars in Space, the most fabulous mix of silver holo glitter.  There's stars, squares (man, I love square glitter), hexes and micro glitter.  I liked this one as there was enough glitter on
